ST. GENEVIEVE'S REGRET

In 1859 a great church was built here for St. Genevieve, patron of Paris, a holy virgin whose consecration was foretold when she was 7. She diverted Attila the Hun and saved Paris, but her virginal powers could not repel the barbarian loss of values brought by 1960's America - and the church was destroyed by "urban renewal". In a rare act of social regret, this rusting abstraction - a monument to her monument - was erected and stands in the nearly abandoned pedestrian mall.
